An annual or biennial plant of the Asteraceae family native to North America, commonly found on roadsides and wastelands (illustration). It was introduced to Japan around the time of the Meiji Restoration and is now found wild in many places. Young shoots can be boiled and eaten as a dip or salad. In North America, it was used as a medicine for stones and as a diuretic. The stems are upright and can reach a height of 1.5m. The basal leaves have long stalks, are ovate, and have coarse, sharp serrated edges. The stem leaves are oblanceolate, alternate, thin, and hairy on both sides. The flowering season is June to October. The stems branch at the top and produce numerous flower heads about 2cm in diameter. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
