French geographer. His doctoral thesis in 1905, a study of the Picardy region in northern France, was highly acclaimed as a representative example of French geography. After graduating from the University of Lille, he was invited to teach human geography at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he participated in the planning of the compilation of "Topography of the World" by Bidart de la Brache, and published "Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg" and "The British Isles" in 1927. He also made a significant contribution to research on rural settlements around the world as chairman of the Committee on Rural Settlements of the International Geographical Union (IGU). One of his most notable works is "Problems of Human Geography," published posthumously in 1942.
