A freshwater fish belonging to the family Cobicidae, order Cypriniformes, class Osteichthyes. A species endemic to Japan, it is designated as a national natural monument. It has local names such as Aihada and Umi-dojo. It is found only in the Lake Biwa and Yodogawa water systems and in several rivers in Okayama Prefecture. It reaches a total length of 12 centimeters. Its body is laterally compressed, its snout is slightly pointed, and the rear edge of its tail fin is forked, unlike other species. Its body color is a light blue, giving it an overall appearance similar to that of ayu. It inhabits sunken reefs, sandy muddy bottoms with lots of boulders, and gravel bottoms, and feeds mainly on benthic animals such as chironomid larvae. It spawns from May to July.
