A large river that flows along the border between China and Russia in the north of North Korea and empties into the Sea of Japan. In China, it is called the Tumen River. It is 520.5 km long and has a drainage area of 10,513 square kilometers. It originates in the Tianchi Lake on Mount Paektu, flows eastward, forming the border between North Korea and China, and empties into the Sohongdan and Seodushu Rivers, and into the Hoeryongcheon River at Hoeryong. It joins the Haehuanghe River, which flows south from Chinese territory, at Onsong, and meanders southward, empties into the Oryongcheon River at Sinken, and increases in volume to become a large river. It passes through granite areas and alluvial plains downstream before emptying into the Sea of Japan. The geology and resources of the basin are basalt to the west of the Seodushu River, and granite and granite gneiss in the midstream. The area downstream of Hoeryong, including Onsong, Goganwon, and Agochi coastal areas, is a land of lignite deposits in the Tertiary layer, and produces over 80% of North Korea's lignite production. Musan, located upstream, has deposits of 1.1 billion tons of magnetite. Forestry resources are also abundant, with forest land accounting for 94% of the entire basin. The navigable distance from the river mouth is 85 km. [Fish pond] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
