The 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Reigned 1861-76. During his reign, during the late Tanzimat period, he promoted Westernization reforms, but his government was beset by difficulties, including successive uprisings by the Balkan nations, the Cretan crisis (1866-69), and the collapse of the empire's finances due to accumulated foreign debt (1875). In his later years, he was criticized by liberal activists such as Namuk Kemal for his extravagant spending and autocratic rule, which he implemented through lavish travels to Europe and the construction of villas, leading to his dethronement. His death shortly thereafter is the subject of debate, with some claiming it was suicide or poisoning.

オスマン帝国の第32代スルタン。在位1861‐76年。帝の治世はタンジマート後期にあたり，西欧化改革の推進につとめたが，バルカン諸民族のあいつぐ蜂起，クレタ問題(1866‐69)，外債の累積による帝国財政の破綻(1875)など政局は困難をきわめ，晩年は豪奢なヨーロッパ旅行，離宮の建設などによる浪費と専制政治を，ナムク･ケマルらの自由主義運動家たちによって批判され，廃位された。その直後の彼の死は自殺か毒殺か論争のまととなっている。
