Born on April 1, 1895. He studied at Nikkatsu's motion picture narrator training school, and in 1917 he became the head narrator at the Teikoku-kan in Asakusa, Tokyo. He became as popular as Tokugawa Musei. When movies became talkies he turned to light comedy acting, and in 1933 he joined the Kingdom of Laughter with Furukawa Roppa and others, later becoming the leader of the troupe. He passed away on December 2, 1964, at the age of 69. He was from Okayama Prefecture and dropped out of Waseda University. His real name was Etsu.
