A coined word combining the prefix topo-, derived from the Greek word topos (place), with taxy, derived from taxis (arrangement, order). When a new phase is transformed or formed in a solid phase by the diffusion of temperature, pressure, atmospheric constituents, or a combination of these, the new and old phases have a crystallographic orientation relationship determined by their respective crystal structures. Examples of natural minerals that have been reported include pyrrhotite changing into marcasite and pyrite. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
