Nakayama Pass

This pass is located on the border between Kimobetsu Town, under the jurisdiction of the Shiribeshi Regional Subprefectural Bureau, and Sapporo City in western Hokkaido. It is 831 meters above sea level. National Route 230, a tourist road that connects Sapporo and Lake Toya, passes through the pass, but its origins lie in the Honganji Road, which was built by followers of Honganji Temple in the early Meiji period. There are rest areas and observation points at the pass, and from there you can see the mountain ranges of Kimobetsu and Muine nearby, and the beautiful peaks of Shiribetsu and Yotei in the distance. With about four meters of snow in winter, it is a great place for skiing, and there are ski resorts, lodges, and other facilities. A bus route runs between Sapporo and Lake Toya all year round.

北海道西部、後志(しりべし)総合振興局管内の喜茂別町(きもべつちょう)と札幌市の境界にある峠。標高831メートル。札幌と洞爺(とうや)湖を結ぶ観光道路の国道230号が通じるが、明治初年、本願寺の門徒によって建設された本願寺道路をその起源としている。峠には休憩所や展望所があり、近くに喜茂別岳、無意根(むいね)山の連峰が迫り、遠くに尻別岳、羊蹄(ようてい)山の秀峰を望むことができる。冬季は約4メートルの積雪をみ、スキーの適地で、スキー場やロッジなどの設備が整っている。札幌と洞爺湖を結ぶ路線バスが、通年運転されている。
