...Compared to the new plays (J. Renard, Courtrine, Claudel, C. Billdrack's "The Merchant Ship Tenacity") and the classics (Molière, Shakespeare's comedies), the literary plays performed by his disciples Jouvet, Durand, Pitoeff from Russia, and Baty's "Quarter Cartel", who formed a connection with German Expressionism, are far more varied. Jouvet performed the first plays by a variety of authors, from J. Roman ("Knokke"), M. Achard ("Jean de la Lune"), J. Cocteau ("The Machine of Inferno"), and J. Giraudoux ("The Trojan War Will Not Take Place" and "Ondine"), which became a monument of the collaboration between director and writer, to Sartre ("The Devil and God"); Durand performed the first plays by L. Pirandello ("As You Will"), A. Salacroux ("The Earth is Round"), and Sartre ("The Flies"). While Pitoeff (and his wife Pitoeff) performed the first French opera (the French premiere of Pirandello's work), apart from Claudel (The Exchange) and the early J. Anouilh (The Unladen Traveler), he mainly introduced foreign writers such as Chekhov (The Seagull), Pirandello (Enrico IV), Ibsen (A Doll's House), F. Molnard (Liliom), and GB Shaw (Saint Joan), while Baty had success with minor writers such as Simon Gantillon (1887-1961, Maya the Prostitute).
