Japanese: トペン（英語表記）topeng[ジヤワ]

A masked dance drama from Java and Bali. Topeng means mask or masked dance drama, and it is unclear when this word first came into use, but documents from the 9th century onwards make it clear that masked dance dramas based on ancestor worship rituals played an important role in the Hindu dynasties of Java. Topeng as a performing art can be seen in various places today, but in Western and Eastern Java it is based on the heroic legend of the Hindu Javanese period, the Panji tale, and in Bali it deals with the history of the Balinese dynasty, called Babad.

ジャワ島およびバリ島の仮面舞踊劇。トペンは仮面ないし仮面舞踊劇を意味する語で，この語がいつごろから使われだしたかは定かでないが，祖霊崇拝儀礼に基づく仮面舞踊劇が，ジャワのヒンドゥー系王朝において重要な役割を果たしていたことは，9世紀以降の文献に明らかである。芸能としてのトペンは現在各地に見られるが，西部ジャワ，東部ジャワではヒンドゥー･ジャワ時代の英雄伝説パンジ物語を題材とし，バリ島ではババッドと呼ばれるバリの王朝史を扱っている。
