American black bear

It is an animal of the order Carnivora, family Ursidae. It is also called American bear. It is called American black bear in contrast to Asiatic black bear in East Asia, but it is a different genus and species. It is distributed from Alaska in North America along the Rocky Mountains to Mexico, and also along the Gulf of Mexico. Its head and body length is 1.8 meters, and it weighs up to 200 kilograms. Its fur is usually black, but some have white spots on their forechest. It is omnivorous, mainly eating fruit and herbs, but also fish such as salmon. It may also destroy crops such as corn. It is a skilled tree climber, and like the Japanese black bear, it has a habit of peeling the bark of planted trees such as Douglas fir. This bear appears before visitors to American national parks such as Yellowstone. It will not harm humans if it is not provoked, but it is strong, so caution is required.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目クマ科の動物。アメリカグマともよばれる。東アジアのツキノワグマ（アジアクロクマ）に対してアメリカクロクマというが、別属別種である。北アメリカのアラスカからロッキー山脈沿いにメキシコまで、またメキシコ湾沿いにも分布する。頭胴長1.8メートル、体重200キログラムに達する。毛は普通黒、前胸に白斑(はくはん)の出るものもある。雑食性で、樹木の果実、草本など植物質のものがおもであるが、サケなど魚類も食べる。また、トウモロコシなどの作物を荒らすことがある。木登りが巧みなほか、ニホンツキノワグマと同様、ダグラスモミ（トガサワラ）などの植栽木の樹皮をはぐ習性がある。イエローストーンなどアメリカの国立公園で、訪問者の前に現れるのはこのクマである。怒らせたりしなければ人間に害を加えることはないが力が強いので注意が必要である。
