The full title is Thirty-three Variations for Piano in C Major on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli, Op. 120 (1823). Beethoven composed many variations for piano, most of which were written around 1800. He completed only two works between 1806 and 1809, and these variations are the only ones from his middle and late period. They were composed between 1819 and 1823, in parallel with his large-scale works Mass Solemn and Symphony No. 9. This work was composed as part of a project by music publisher Anton Diabelli (1781-1858) in which he called on famous composers living in Austria to compete in composing variations on the same theme, and was dedicated to his lover Antonie Brentano.

正式名称は《アントン･ディアベリのワルツに基づくピアノのための33の変奏曲･ハ長調》作品120(1823)。ベートーベンはピアノ用の変奏曲を多く作曲しているが，そのほとんどは1800年前後に集中している。2作品が1806‐09年に成立しているだけで，以後の中･後期ではこの変奏曲が唯一のものである。1819‐23年の間に，つまり大曲の《荘厳ミサ曲》《第九交響曲》と並行して作曲されている。この作品は楽譜出版社を営むディアベリAnton Diabelli(1781‐1858)がオーストリア在住の著名な作曲家たちに同一主題による変奏曲の競作を呼びかけた企画のもとに作曲されたもので，恋人アントニエ･ブレンターノに献呈されている。
