A general term for insects in the order Trichoptera. The name Trichoptera comes from the fact that their wing membranes are densely covered with hair compared to other insects. They are found all over the world except for the polar regions and marine areas because their larvae are freshwater. Adults are small to medium in size, with a body length of 0.2 to 40 mm. At first glance, they resemble moths, but they can be distinguished by the fact that when at rest, they stretch their long antennae forward and fold their wings into a roof shape. Most have yellow, brown, or blackish brown wings with no noticeable markings, but some have orange-yellow, indigo, or white markings (purple caddisflies).
