Pontos - Pontos (English spelling)

Pontos - Pontos (English spelling)

The northeastern region of ancient Asia Minor, facing the Black Sea (ancient name Pontos Euxeinos, also called Pontus Euxinus), between Paphragonia (later Bithynia) and Armenia. Blessed with water and a warm climate, it was fertile, producing an abundance of grains and fruits, as well as materials for ships and mineral resources. Greek colonies were established along the coast from the mid-7th century BC and prospered, and the surrounding areas were Hellenized, but the inland areas were divided into various tribes. Since the time of Cyrus the Great, it had been subject to Persia, but in 363 BC, the satrap Ariobarzanes essentially subjugated the various tribes of the area, laying the foundations for an independent kingdom. The Kingdom of Pontus, established in 298 BC, reached its zenith during the time of Mithridates VI, but after a conflict with Rome, it came under its control and the kingdom was divided.
