A village in Ibi County, on the western edge of Gifu Prefecture. Population 721 (1995). A mountain village in the upper reaches of the Sakanai River, a tributary of the Ibi River, it borders both Fukui and Shiga prefectures, with mountains such as Mikuni-ga-take (1,209m) and Kanakuso-dake (1,314m) as its borders. Settlements are scattered along the river, with the central settlement being Hirose, where National Route 303 passes. Agriculture is self-sufficient and the village relies on forestry, but depopulation has been progressing rapidly in recent years. There is the Ibi Kogen Ski Resort in the eastern part of the village, and two power plants, one at Kawakami and one at Hirose. 岐阜県西端,揖斐(いび)郡の村。人口721(1995)。揖斐川支流の坂内川上流域の山村で,三国ヶ岳(1209m),金糞(かなくそ)岳(1314m)などの山々を境に福井・滋賀両県と接する。集落は河川沿いに点在し,中心集落は国道303号線が通る広瀬。農業は自給程度で林業に依存するが,近年過疎化が急速に進んでいる。村の東部に揖斐高原スキー場が,川上と広瀬の2ヵ所に発電所がある。【上田 雅子】
