Sojiji Temple

Japanese: 総持寺 - そうじじ
Sojiji Temple
The head temple of the Soto sect of Buddhism, located in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai. Originally located in Kushihi Village, Fugeshi County, Noto, Shogakuji Temple (temple) was said to have been founded by Gyoki. In 1321, the head priest Joken handed it over to Keizan and made it the Sojiji Temple of the Soto sect. It became an official temple under Emperor Go-Daigo, and after competing with Eiheiji for influence, Eiheiji was designated the head temple and Sojiji the head temple of Noto. After it burned down in 1898, it was moved to its current location by Ishikawa Sodo and others, but the Noto monastery was rebuilt as a branch temple and is considered the founder temple. Important cultural properties include the Keizan Chinzo, the Buddha Hall Daihachi, and the "Sojiji Chukyo Engi."

Sojiji Temple

A Soto Zen temple in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai. In 1321, Keizan Jokin converted Shogaku Kannon-do (Shoro-ji Temple) to Zen Buddhism, and it became the base of the Gasan school under the second head priest, Gasan Joseki. In 1570, it was destroyed by fire during war. In the early Edo period, the Maeda clan of Kaga Domain (Kanazawa Domain) worked to restore it, and in 1615 it was designated a place of prayer for the shogunate and called Noh Honzan. In 1898, the temple buildings burned down, and in 1910 it was moved to Tsurumi, Kanagawa Prefecture. This temple was rebuilt on the site and continues to exist as the Sojiji Soin temple.
