A Shingon Buddhist monk from the end of the Heian period. Founder of Ninnaji Jojuin. His pen name was Zengyo. He was also called Jojuin Sojo and Ben no Daisojo. He was from Kyoto. His secular surname was Genji. At a young age, he became a monk under Kyohan (1031-1104) and received the Denpo Kanjo (a Buddhist monk who transmits the teachings of the Law). After demonstrating miraculous powers by practicing the Daihokutoho and Kujakukyoho Shingon Esoteric Buddhist rituals at Toba Palace, he practiced both rituals more than twenty times. His academic and religious abilities were unparalleled, and he was honored as the Kanpaku of the Law. In 1112 (Ten'ei 3), he became the 37th head of Toji Temple. He also served as the head priest of Koryuji Temple, Hosshoji Temple, and Todaiji Temple. His disciples numbered 33, including Kakuho (1092-1153), Shinsho (1098-1142), Yogen (1075-1151), Shoe (1094-1137), Kanpen (1100-1166), and Kakuban (each of which branched off into the Six Schools of Hirosawa), and he brought the Hirosawa school (a branch of the Shingon sect of Buddhism) to its peak.
