Uonuma Region - Uonumamachiho
The collective name for Ojiya City, Tokamachi City, and the two cities and three counties of Kita-Uonuma District, Naka-Uonuma District, and Minami-Uonuma District in Niigata Prefecture. Population 243,538 (1995). Occupying the southeastern part of the prefecture, it borders Fukushima, Gunma, and Nagano prefectures via the Echigo and Mikuni mountain ranges, and includes mountainous areas, the Uonuma Hills, the Tokamachi Basin in the middle reaches of the Shinano River, and the Muikamachi Basin of the Uono River, a tributary of the Shinano River. Railways include the JR Joetsu Line and Joetsu Shinkansen, and in 1997 the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line. Roads connect the area to Nagano Prefecture via the Zenkoji Kaido, to Gunma Prefecture via the Mikuni Kaido and the Kan-Etsu Expressway, and to Fukushima Prefecture, over 80 ri away. In the Middle Ages, it was a junction of the Kan-Etsu region, where the Nitta and Uesugi clans invaded, and there were Ueda Manor, Tsumari Manor, and Yabugami Manor.

新潟県小千谷市,十日町市と北魚沼郡,中魚沼郡,南魚沼郡の2市3郡の総称。人口24万3538(1995)。県の南東部を占め越後・三国両山脈で福島・群馬・長野各県に接し,山地,魚沼丘陵と信濃川中流の十日町盆地,支流魚野川の六日町盆地を含む。鉄道はJR上越線と上越新幹線,1997年には北越急行ほくほく線,道路は善光寺街道で長野県へ,三国街道と関越自動車道で群馬県へ,八十里越えで福島県へ通じている。中世には新田氏,上杉氏の進出など関越の接点で,上田荘,妻有(つまり)荘,藪神荘があった。
