A league that Athens called on other cities to establish in 377 BC in opposition to Sparta, which had effectively taken over Greek power since the Treaty of Antalcidas. At its peak, 75 states (polises) participated. In order to avoid repeating the mistakes of the Delian League of the 5th century BC, the league made it clear that it recognized the freedom and autonomy of its member states, prohibited the stationing of troops and the collection of tribute, and prohibited Athenian citizens from owning land in member states. During the Inter-City War (357-355 BC), powerful poleis such as Chios, Rhodes, and Byzantium defected one after another, causing the league to shrink significantly and losing its raison d'être.
