Bottle palm

Japanese: トックリヤシ - とっくりやし（英語表記）bottle palm

A species of the genus Hyophorbe in the palm family, native to Mauritius (illustration). It is sometimes classified as part of the genus Mascarena . It is a tall tree that grows to over 15m in height, with the lower part of the trunk swelling out like a bottle. It is most ornamental when it is a seedling at a height of 2-3m, and the shape of the trunk becomes distorted as it grows. The leaves are pinnately compound, about 150cm long, with 40-60 pairs of leaflets. The petioles and leaf sheaths are pale yellow-white-green, and the leaf sheaths are cylindrical, enveloping the upper part of the trunk.
