A state in northwest Brazil. With an area of 1,564,445 km2, it is the largest state in Brazil, accounting for 18.4% of the country's land area. It has a population of 2.32 million (1995), with a population density of 1.5 people/km2. The state capital is Manaus. It is an inland state located between 2°9' north and 9°49' south latitudes. In 1652, Portugal established the Capitania system in the Amazon River basin, and its territory is roughly equivalent to the present states of Pará and Amazonas. In 1757, the western half of the state was separated and became São José da Barra do Rio Negro, then Rio Negro, and after the establishment of the Republic (1889), it became the state of Amazonas.
