This river originates from Lake Akan in Akan National Park in eastern Hokkaido, and flows southward, joining tributaries such as the Teshibetsu and Shitakara, before emptying into the Pacific Ocean in the west of Kushiro City. It is 89 km long. The upper reaches are covered in virgin forest, but the river valley in the middle and lower reaches is a dairy farming area, and downstream, paper mills take industrial water. Originally a tributary of the Kushiro River, the river flowed downstream from Yamahana in Kushiro City, shifting to its current course with a mouth at Otanoshike, due to floods in 1920-22. The low-lying, swampy Kushiro plain from the lower reaches to the mouth of the river belongs to Kushiro Marsh National Park. National Route 240 runs along the Akan River.
