A deciduous tree of the Eucommia family found in the mountains of central mainland China, which can reach a height of 20 m (illustration). It is sometimes planted in botanical gardens in Japan as well. The leaves are alternate, with petioles 1.5-2.5 cm long and leaf blades 6-18 cm long, 3-8 cm wide, elliptical to oval, and finely serrated edges. Dioecious. Flowers appear in large numbers in a scattered pattern at the base of young branches around April. There is no perianth, and male flowers have 4-10 stamens and female flowers have one pistil. 中国大陸中部の山地に分布するトチュウ科の落葉高木で,高さ20mになる(イラスト)。日本でも植物園などに植えられていることがある。葉は互生し,葉柄は1.5~2.5cm,葉身は長さ6~18cm,幅3~8cmの楕円形~卵形で,縁に細かい鋸歯がある。雌雄異株。花は4月ごろ,若枝の基部に散形状に多数生じる。花被はなく,雄花は4~10本のおしべ,雌花は1本のめしべからなる。果実は1個の種子の周囲を翼でかこまれた長さ3~3.5cmの扁平,楕円形の翼果。
