A deciduous tree of the Eucommia family found in the mountains of central mainland China, which can reach a height of 20 m (illustration). It is sometimes planted in botanical gardens in Japan as well. The leaves are alternate, with petioles 1.5-2.5 cm long and leaf blades 6-18 cm long, 3-8 cm wide, elliptical to oval, and finely serrated edges. Dioecious. Flowers appear in large numbers in a scattered pattern at the base of young branches around April. There is no perianth, and male flowers have 4-10 stamens and female flowers have one pistil.
