…The Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain in the mid-5th century brought the Britons of England under their control, but the Britons of Wales took advantage of the rugged terrain to maintain their independence. The word "Welsh" means "foreigner" in Old English. The Britons, who were once the rulers of Britain, were oppressed by the English (Anglo-Saxons) and forced into Wales, where they came to be called outsiders.
