The green mountains and the blue sea are as low as the ground.” ※Taiheiki (late 14th century) 28: “The pine and cypress shadows are bathed in the green mountains, and the rocks and stones flow through the river , like fluttering snow.” [Li Bai – Poem to a Friend] ② A place where bones are buried. A place for a tomb. ※Qing Kyo Iko (1892)〈Shaku Getsusei〉 vol. 1: Wall poem titled “Where should I bury my bones? Where are the green mountains ? ” [Su Shi – Poem by the surviving son of Liang Cheng, who gave the prison guard Liang Cheng a gift.] [2] A name for the Japanese lute , Biwa . It is a famous instrument brought from China, Tang Dynasty, and since Taira no Tsunemasa was a master of the biwa, it was temporarily bestowed by Prince Shukaku of Ninna-ji Temple. ※Heike (before 13th century) 7 "When he returned to Japan, passing on three pieces of music, Gensho, Shishimaru, and Aoyama passed on three biwas to each other." [Additional note] (Regarding (1) ②) Originally, it meant a mountain with thick trees, but from the example of Su Shi's poem and the work of Seikyo, it has come to be understood as a graveyard or a place of death.

[2] The name of the area on the Yamate Plateau in the northern part of Tokyo's Minato Ward. The Oyama Highway passed through the area from the Middle Ages, and the area developed into a place with the Aoyama Inn. In the early Edo period, the area was given its name by Aoyama Tadanari, who bestowed it upon Tokugawa Ieyasu. The area is home to the Togu Palace and the Meiji Shrine Outer Garden.

[1] 〘名〙① 樹木などが生い茂って青々としている山。青嶂(せいしょう)。青峰。※菅家文草(900頃)四・遊覧偶吟「鳥出樊籠翅不傷、青山碧海任低」※太平記(14C後)二八「松柏影を浸して、青山も動くが如く、石岩流れを徹(とほ)して、白雪の翻るに相似たり」 〔李白‐送友人詩〕② 骨を埋める土地。墳墓の地。※清狂遺稿(1892)〈釈月性〉上・将東遊題壁詩「埋骨何期墳墓地、人間到処有青山」 〔蘇軾‐授獄卒梁成以遺子由詩〕[2] 琵琶(びわ)の名。中国、唐から伝来した名器で、平経正が琵琶の名手であったので、仁和寺の守覚法親王から一時下賜されたという。※平家(13C前)七「三曲を伝へて帰朝せしに、玄象・師子丸・青山、三面の琵琶を相伝してわたりけるが」[補注]((一)②について) 本来木の茂った山のことであるが、挙例の蘇軾の詩、ひいて清狂の作から墓地、死に場所のことと解せられることになった。

[1] 〘名〙① 草木が青々と茂っている山。※古事記(712)上・歌謡「引(ひ)こづらひ 我が立たせれば 阿遠夜麻(アヲヤマ)に 鵼(ぬえ)は鳴きぬ さ野つ鳥 雉(きぎし)は響(とよ)む」※若菜集(1897)〈島崎藤村〉秋風の歌「ふりさけ見れば青山(アヲヤマ)も 色はもみぢに染めかへて」② 祝儀などで用いる細工蒲鉾(かまぼこ)の一種。[2] 東京都港区北部の山手台地上の地名。中世から大山街道が通り、青山の宿があって発展。江戸初期、青山忠成がこの地帯を徳川家康から拝領したため呼ばれた。東宮御所、明治神宮外苑がある。
