A city on the west bank of the Nile in central Egypt. Population 156,000 (1992). Its correct Arabic name is Sūhāj. In ancient times it was called Pao, and as the largest base of Coptic Christians it has many Coptic churches. On the opposite bank is Akhmim, a place of worship for the god Min. With good water access, it has developed as a commercial transit city and has a thriving textile industry. Nearby is the town of Variana, home to the ruins of Abydos, famous as the site of worship for the god Osiris. [Yoshimura Sakuji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
