Sadaoki Oda

A samurai and tea master from the early Edo period. He was the grandson of Oda Nobunaga, and his father was Oda Sakyo-no-jo Nobutada. He was commonly known as Gorozaemon. He was known by the pseudonyms Einendo, Kojakuken, and Sanka Rojin. In 1661, he served as the magistrate of the Imperial Palace Construction, and in the third year of the same year, he became a high-ranking official and was appointed as a Junior Fifth Rank Chamberlain and Chief Accountant. He was awarded a stipend of 1,000 koku. He learned tea from Oda Nagayoshi, the nephew of Oda Urakusai, and founded the Sadaoki school as a branch of the Uraku school. He presented tea to the second Tokugawa lord Mitsutomo and the third Tokugawa lord Tsunamasa of the Owari Tokugawa clan. His favorite tea rooms are described in the "Chado Seidenshu," but none of them still exist today. His disciples included Oda Sadamoto, who served the Owari clan, Sakata Shosuke, who wrote "Kaizōshū," and Matsumoto Kenkyu, who is counted among the Seven Masters of the Sadaoki School for his books such as "Tanakakakushū" and "Teiyōshū."

江戸前期の武士,茶人。織田信長の孫,父は織田左京亮信貞。通称五郎左衛門。永年堂,黄雀軒,三過老人などと号した。寛文1(1661)年禁裏造営奉行を務め,同3年高家となり従五位下侍従,主計頭に叙任。禄1000石を給せらる。茶を織田有楽斎の甥織田長好に学び,有楽流の一派として貞置流を開いた。尾張徳川家2代光友,3代綱誠に茶を呈した。『茶道正伝集』に好みの茶室が記されるが,いずれも現存しない。門下に尾張家に仕えた織田貞幹,『懐蔵集』の著を残した坂田正輔,『咄覚集』『貞要集』などの著書で貞置門七人衆に数えられる松本見休などがいる。
