Japanese: オオバン(大鷭) - オオバン（英語表記）coot

A bird of the family Rallidae (illustration) in the order Grui. It is widely distributed from the subarctic south of Eurasia, and also in New Guinea, Australia, and Tasmania. Those that breed in the northern part of the Palaearctic region migrate to temperate and tropical regions of Africa and Asia to winter. In Japan, it breeds from central Honshu northward, and can be seen from central Honshu southward in winter. It lives in lakes and ponds, and particularly prefers areas with lush reeds and wild rice, which serve as nesting and hiding places. Total length is about 40 cm. The beak, front plate, and tips of the secondary flight feathers are white, but the whole body is almost sooty black.

ツル目クイナ科の鳥（イラスト）。ユーラシア大陸の亜寒帯以南に広く分布し，またニューギニア，オーストラリア，タスマニアまで分布する。旧北区の北部で繁殖するものはアフリカ，アジアの温帯から熱帯に渡り越冬。日本では本州中部以北で繁殖し，冬季は本州中部以南で見られる。湖沼や池にすみ，とくに営巣場所や隠れ場になるヨシやマコモなどの繁茂しているところを好む。全長約40cm。くちばしと額板と次列風切の先端が白いほかはほぼ全身がすすけた黒色。
