Died January 8, 1878. Petersburg. Russian poet. Born into an aristocratic family, from an early age he sympathized with the miserable lives of serfs and tugboats, and had an infinite hatred for tyranny, which became the leitmotif of his later poetry. He also excelled as an editor of magazines, presiding over Sovremennik (Contemporaries) and Otechestvenniye zapiski (Records of the Fatherland). His other works include Russkie zhenshchiny (Russian Wives) (71-72, translated into Japanese as The Wives of the Decembrists).
