1889‐1974 Swedish geographer and glaciologist. Following in the tradition of academic exploration by such thinkers as Nordenskield and Hedin, he succeeded Yale in developing Nordic geography. He was a professor at Stockholm University from 1929 to 1950, and was stationed in Oslo as the Norwegian ambassador from 1950 to 1956. He served as president of the International Geographical Union from 1952 to 1960, and also participated in the Japan regional conference. In 1910 he surveyed the Svalbard archipelago and studied the fluctuations of Sverdrup and glacial weather, and in 1931 he conducted a joint Swedish-Norwegian Arctic expedition, compiled an academic report, and then conducted a geological survey of the North Atlantic coast (1948).
