〘Noun〙 A coin with a round hole that was minted over a long period from the Kan'ei era ( 1624-44 ) to the beginning of the Meiji era during the Edo period. There are copper 1-mon coins, iron 1-mon coins, brass 4-mon coins, and iron 4-mon coins. The copper 1-mon coin was officially minted by the Tokugawa clan in 1636 as a unified coin, but in fact it was first minted in Mito ten years earlier in 1636 with permission from the shogunate. Iron 1-mon coins were minted in 1739 , brass 4-mon coins in 1768 , and iron 4-mon coins in 1860, and 4- mon coins had ripple marks on the back to distinguish them from 1-mon coins. Mints were established all over the country, but the weight and material were often changed during the Edo period as gold and silver coins were recoined. With the issuance of new currency in December 1871 ( Meiji 4 ), the copper 1-mon coin was set at 1 rin, the 4-mon coin at 2 rin, the iron 1-mon coin at 16 rin, and the 4-mon coin at 8 rin. Kan'ei Tsuho coin. Kan'ei coin. *Haikai-Butsushu (1678) "I've been collecting letters for twenty years, and the Kan'ei Tsuho coin has been a success."
