An underskirt or waistband used by Western European women in the second half of the 19th century to expand their skirts. The word originates from the Latin compound word crinis (hair, tail) and linum (flax, linen). It entered Italian as crinolino, was pronounced krinolín in French, and krinolín in English. It appeared in Europe around 1830, and became very popular around 1850. At first it was made only of horsehair, but later it was mixed with cotton, linen, and wool. In 1856, the artificial clinoline was developed. Also known as a cage-shaped petticoat, it was made from whalebone, wire, springs, etc., and was used to support skirts of various silhouettes.
