A cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon. It is a yellow liquid with a melting point of -5.8°C and a boiling point of 142-143°C. It is a compound with four double bonds in a ring of eight carbon atoms, but there has been much debate about the shape of this molecule. It has been revealed that it is actually tub-shaped as shown in the figure, and is not planar with the eight carbon atoms in the same plane. This means that the four double bonds do not stabilize the molecule through resonance, and therefore it does not have aromaticity similar to benzene.

環式不飽和炭化水素の一つ。黄色の液体で，融点－5.8℃，沸点142～143℃。炭素原子8個から成る環内に二重結合を四つ有する化合物であるが，この分子の形については多くの議論があった。実際は図に示すような浴槽形をしており，8個の炭素原子が同一平面内にある平面形ではないことが明らかとなっている。これは，4個の二重結合は共鳴による分子の安定化をもたらしていないことを意味し，したがってベンゼン類似の芳香族性をもたない。
