Long Live Iyo

Japanese:
Long Live Iyo

Manzai is held in the Matsuyama area of Ehime Prefecture. It is made up of about 10 people, including the tayu, saizō, jiromatsu, and dancers, and they perform a group dance in a horizontal formation accompanied by the tayu's words and songs, drums, shamisen, and clappers. The costumes are very showy, with folded hoods sewn with gold and silver threads and mirror pieces and glass beads attached, women's long undergarments with colored sashes, and long skirt-like hakama. It is said that the origin of the dance is that it was brought from Kamigata when the founder of the domain was transferred from Kuwana during the Kan'ei era (1624-1644), but judging from the style of the performance, it seems that it was created by adding the art of Gannenbo. The Saizō dance is performed at the beginning and end of the piece, and in between songs, there are songs such as "Hashirazukushi," "Bunenodori," and "Yoshitsune Senbonzakura." The "Matsuzukushi," which uses many fans to represent old pine trees, is famous, and skits are also performed.
