… The second largest party after the Christian Democrats was the Italian Communist Party, which maintained a solid influence in general elections in the 1950s and 1960s, receiving around 25% of the vote. The Communist Party based its cultural ideology on the “Prison Notebooks” written by one of its founders, Gramsci, while imprisoned under the Fascist regime, and had built a strong base in the central Italian region of Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Umbria, known as the “Red Belt.” In 1956, under the leadership of General Secretary Togliatti, the party launched a course of structural reforms, advocated an Italian path to socialism, and sought an independent position for Italian Marxism within the international communist movement. …
