Nenets people - Nenets (English spelling)
An ethnic minority group living in the tundra and forest areas from the Kola Peninsula in the Ural Mountains in the west to the Taimyr Peninsula in the east. The Nenets are a self-proclaimed ethnic group, formerly known as "Yurak-Samoyeds." The population is approximately 35,000. Their language belongs to the Samodi branch of the Uralic language family and is broadly divided into tundra and forest dialects. Their traditional occupation is reindeer herding, but they also fish and hunt and gather. Until recently, they were organized into kolkhozes and sovkhozes. In particular, the inhabitants of the Pechora River basin in the western Ural Mountains came under Russian rule in the 17th century and suffered significant economic and social effects. Some of them adopted Greek Orthodoxy, but on the other hand, traditional beliefs, rituals, and shamanism have long been preserved. In addition, there are elements in their rich oral traditions that suggest that their ancestors arrived from the south.
