Volcanic islands distributed around the southeastern tip of New Guinea. Part of Papua New Guinea. The three main islands are Goodenough, Ferguson, and Normanby. Copra, gold, and nickel are produced. French navigator D'Entrecasteaux arrived in 1793. Approximately 3,300 km2 . Population: approximately 40,000 (1980).
