A woody herb of the Rubiaceae family that grows under the tropical rainforests of Brazil (illustration). The dried roots are used medicinally, and for this reason it is cultivated in tropical regions. The long, woody stems creep above ground and reach a height of 10-40 cm. The leaves are opposite and elliptical, 5-9 cm long, with forked stipules. Part of the root is thick and bead-like. This part is used as ipecac. The pedicels are shorter than the leaf axils, and at the end of them a dozen or so flowers grow in a head shape. The flowers are pentamerous and actinosymmetric, with a white, tubular funnel-shaped corolla and a two-lobed lower ovary, each with one ovule.
