In the West, from ancient Greece to the Middle Ages, the peony was revered as a medicinal herb with the greatest efficacy. Its English name, peony, and genus name, Paeonia , come from Paiōn, the Greek god of medicine. Paiōn was later confused with Asclepius, and gave rise to the legend that this god of medicine used the roots of the peony to heal the wounds of many gods, including Hades (Pluto).
