It is the capital of the Calabria region in southern Italy, and the province of Catanzaro. It is located about 130 km northeast of the tip of the Italian peninsula, at an altitude of 340 m. It was founded as a Byzantine town in the 10th century. It was known for silk weaving in the 17th and 18th centuries, and played an important role in the Napoleonic Wars and the movement for Italian unification. The town has the Baroque-style San Domenico Monastery and an art museum. A cable car runs to the railway station at Catanzaro-Sala at the foot of the mountain. It is a distribution center for agricultural products, and has a chemical industry. Population: 93,464 (1991 estimate).
