Northern faction

...If we consider jiuta in the narrow sense to be music that has not been adapted for koto, or music that has been arranged for koto but has a strong emphasis on shamisen, then most of the performers are from Osaka. Among the performers of the Kiku-suji lineage, also known as the northern school, whose surnames contain the character 'kiku' (chrysanthemum), Kikuhara Hatsuko (1899-), daughter of Kikuhara Kotoji, and among the performers of the Tomi-suji lineage, whose surnames contain the character 'tomi' (tomisuji), whose surnames contain the character 'tomi' (tomisuji), Tomizaki Harunobu, who moved to Tokyo, and his student Toyama Kiyokoto (1913-), both of whom were designated Living National Treasures. Kyushu also had its own unique traditions, and many of them focused on developing the technique of the shamisen, but after Nagatani Yukiteru and his student Kawase Satoko (1873-1957) moved to Tokyo in the Meiji period, the majority of Ikuta-ryu koto performers in Tokyo were also Kyushu-based jiuta shamisen performers.
