A general term for ball games in which a ball is kicked, and also the ball used in the game. There are association style (soccer), rugby style (rugby), American style (American football), Gaelic style (Gaelic football), and Australian style (Australian football). There are records that football was played in England in the 12th century as part of town and village competitions and festivals, and it is said to be the origin of the modern game. In the town itself or in a field, sometimes more than 1,000 people kick or throw a ball and compete to get it to the goal. It was very violent, destroying buildings and causing deaths, so it was often banned. From around the 19th century, it became popular in public schools and universities, and in order to establish rules, the Football Association (FA) was founded in London in 1863, and by 1870, the rules of the game were established, prohibiting running with the ball, kicking the opponent's shins, and catching the ball with the hands. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) was founded in 1871. In the 1870s and 1880s, the prototype of American football was created in the United States as a variation of rugby. In the 1960s and 1990s, touch rugby and touch football were invented as a simplified version of the game to make it safer to play.

ボールを蹴る球技の総称，またその競技に用いられるボールをいう。アソシエーション式 (サッカー ) ，ラグビー式 (ラグビー ) ，アメリカ式 (アメリカンフットボール ) ，ガリア式 (ゲーリックフットボール ) ，オーストラリア式 (オーストラリアンフットボール ) などがある。 12世紀のイングランドで町や村などの対抗戦や祭りの一環としてフットボールが行なわれていたという記録が残っており，現在の競技の起源とされる。町そのものや野原などを舞台に，ときには 1000をこす人々が一つのボールを蹴ったり投げたりして争奪し合いながらゴールに運ぶというもので，建物が破壊されたり死者が出るなどきわめて粗暴であったため，しばしば禁止令がしかれた。 19世紀頃からはパブリック・スクールや大学でも頻繁に行なわれるようになり，ルール整備のため 1863年フットボール・アソシエーション FAがロンドンに設立，1870年までにボールを持って走ること，相手のすねを蹴ること，手でボールをキャッチすることを禁止する競技規則が制定された。 1871年にはラグビー・フットボール・ユニオン RFUが結成された。 1870～80年代アメリカでラグビーの変形としてアメリカンフットボールの原型がつくられた。 1960～90年代競技を簡易化して安全にプレーできるようにしたタッチラグビー，タッチフットボールなどが考案された。
