Kan'ei Kuni Ezu (Map of the Kan'ei Period)

...Edo Shogunate, Toyotomi government in the early modern period, ordered feudal lords to create and submit maps of individual provinces. It began in 1591 (Tensho 19), when Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered feudal lords to create and submit maps and land survey records for all of Japan under the pretext of donating them to the Imperial Court. This was a way to control the whole of Japan under the framework of the Kunigun system, and at the same time, it was part of the creation of a system of total mobilization in preparation for the coming "invasion of China (Korean invasion)". It is certain that maps were actually collected, as evidenced by the "Shokoku Gozencho Komai Besen Torikaku" ("Taichosou", volume 57) and other documents, but to date, this Tensho map has not been found.

…近世の豊臣政権，江戸幕府が諸大名らに命じて作成･提出させた一国単位の絵図。1591年(天正19)豊臣秀吉が禁裏に献納するという名目で，日本全国の国絵図と御前帳(検地帳)を諸大名らに命じて作成･提出させたことに始まる。それは日本全土を国郡制の枠組みによって掌握する手段であり，同時にきたるべき〈唐（から）入り(朝鮮侵略)〉に向けての国内総動員体制づくりの一環であった。〈諸国御前帳　駒井被請取候覚〉(《視聴草》第57冊)などによって，国絵図が実際に徴収されたことは確実だが，現在までのところこの天正の国絵図は発見されていない。…
