chansons à toile (English spelling)

...Famous local dances include the farandole (Provencal: farandoulo), a dance in southern Provence in which men and women join hands and dance to the music of the galoubet (small flute) and timbren (long drum). Narrative songs are also a distinctive feature of French folk songs, such as those that draw on the traditions of the troubadours and troubadours, remnants of the chansons à toile (spinning songs) sung by women while spinning a spinning wheel, and the tradition of the elegy (complante), which has a tragic content and deals with a legendary or novel theme. The distinctive form of French folk songs can also be seen in the combination of couplées (verses) and refrans (repeated phrases).
