Karahojo

Japanese: カラホージョ

The remains of an ancient city in the Turfan Basin, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. It was the capital of the Gaochang Kingdom, but later the pronunciation of "Gaochang" became corrupted and it was called Huozhou after the Yuan dynasty. It became known to Iranian historians as Karakhojo (meaning "Black Gaochang"), and Chinese historians wrote it as Hala Huoshe (He Zhuo). It was also called Idiqut-shahri after the Western Uyghur Kingdom's court and continued to thrive, but after the 14th century the political and economic center gradually shifted to Turfan, about 30 km northwest, and this long-functioning military fortress city was already abandoned by the end of the 18th century.

中国，新疆ウイグル自治区トゥルファン盆地内にある古城跡。高昌国の都城であったが，のち〈高昌〉の音が訛って元代以後に火州と呼ばれ，イラン史家にはカラホージョ(〈黒い高昌〉の意)として知られるようになり，中国史家はこれを哈喇火者(和卓)などと写した。西ウイグル王国の宮廷にちなんでイディクート･シャフリIdiqut‐shahriとも呼ばれ，繁栄を続けたが，14世紀以降政治･経済の中心がしだいに北西約30kmのトゥルファンに移り，永く機能したこの軍事要塞城市も，18世紀末にはすでに廃城となっていた。
