Mount Tanaka

Japanese: 太神山 - たなかみやま

A mountain located in the southwest of Shiga Prefecture, southeast of Otsu City. It is 600m above sea level. It is the main peak of the Tagami mountain range, also known as the Konan Alps, and is mostly made of granite. In the past, cypress trees were cut down to be used for building materials for Todaiji Temple, Fujiwara-kyo, and Heijo-kyo. During the Edo period, it was a bald mountain, but since 1872 (Meiji 5), forestry conservation projects have been carried out and it has recovered considerably. In the early Meiji period, large amounts of topaz and quartz were mined and exported. On the summit is Fudo-ji Temple, founded by Chisho Daishi (→ Enchin), and it is known as Tagami Fudo. The Tokai Nature Trail runs through it, and it belongs to Mikami-Tagami-Shigaraki Prefectural Natural Park.

滋賀県南西部，大津市の南東部にある山。標高 600m。湖南アルプスとも呼ばれる田上山群の主峰で，大部分が花崗岩からなる。古くは東大寺，藤原京，平城京の建築用材としてヒノキが伐採された。江戸時代ははげ山であったが，明治5（1872）年以来，治山事業が行なわれ，かなり回復した。明治初期には黄玉石，水晶が多量に採掘，輸出された。山頂に智証大師（→円珍）開創の不動寺があり，田上不動として知られる。東海自然歩道が通じ，三上・田上・信楽県立自然公園に属する。
