Gorée Island (English spelling)

Japanese: ゴレ[島]（英語表記）Île de Gorée

An island just 3km off the coast of Cape Verde, where Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is located, at the western tip of the African continent. It is 900m long and 300m wide. It is a territory of Senegal. Although it is a small island, it has played an important role in African history. When the Portuguese discovered it in 1444, it was uninhabited and named Palma. They established a commercial base here and used it as a collection point for slaves, beeswax, gum arabic, and other products. It was a time when slaves were also considered "commodities." In 1588, it came into the hands of the Dutch, and in the 17th century, it was named Goree.

アフリカ大陸西端，セネガルの首都ダカールが位置するベルデ岬の沖わずか3kmにうかぶ最大長900m，幅300mほどの島。セネガル領。小島であるが，アフリカの歴史上重要な位置を占める。1444年，ポルトガル人がこの島を発見したときには無人島でパルマ島と名づけられた。彼らはここに商業基地を設け，奴隷，蜜蠟，アラビア･ゴムなどの集荷基地とした。奴隷も“商品”と考えられた時代である。1588年にはオランダの手にわたり，17世紀に入りゴレ島と名づけられた。
