〘Noun〙 ("Ko" is a prefix. In the past it was probably "kotoneri")① In the Heian period, a person who belonged to the Kurodo-dokoro and was used for miscellaneous tasks for the Emperor. A boy for the Emperor . A small shrine attendant in the storehouse. ※Nihon Kiryaku - April 18, 942, Tenkei 5th year, "Small shrine attendant Fujiwara no Nariakira enters the ceremony of kakan" ※Utsubo (c. 970-999) Tadayoshi "Kotoneri-ri-kiri from the Kurodo-dokoro"② = Kodoneriwara (small shrine attendant boy) ※Kagurauta (late 9th century) Omaebari "〈Original〉Omiya's small kotoneri ya tete ya tete ya tete ya tama narabara tete ya"③ In the Middle Ages, a low-ranking official in the Samurai-dokoro of the Edo shogunate. They performed miscellaneous tasks and were in charge of criminals and prisons. ※Addition to the Konoe family book - March 18, 1240 (En'o 2) "Samurai-dokoro miscellaneous staff, kotonari, morning and evening miscellaneous staff, nakama" [Goshiki] (1)① was also called Gokuraku no kotonari because he was in charge of taking in and out the goods from the storehouse. He usually worked in the Koshoden, and the number of staff was initially six, but increased to twelve at the end of the Heian period.
(2)② refers to those who carried out odd jobs for the Imperial Prince's family and the Sekkanke family and below, and had no connection to the Kurodo-dokoro. It also refers to boys who were employed by the Chujo and Shojo of the Imperial Guard before coming of age.

〘名〙 (「こ」は接頭語。古くは「ことねり」か)① 平安時代、蔵人所に属して殿上の雑事に使われた者。殿上の童(わらわ)。御倉(みくら)の小舎人。※日本紀略‐天慶五年(942)四月一八日「小舎人藤原斉敏加冠参入」※宇津保(970‐999頃)忠こそ「蔵人所のことねり来り」② =こどねりわらわ(小舎人童)※神楽歌(9C後)大前張「〈本〉大宮の 少さ古止禰利(コトネリ) や 手手にやは 手手にやは 玉ならば 手手にや」③ 中世、幕府の侍所の下級職員。雑用をつとめ、罪囚、獄舎の事をつかさどった。※近衛家本追加‐延応二年(1240)三月一八日「侍所雑仕、小舎人、朝夕雑色、中間」[語誌](1)①は納殿の御物を出納する役であるところから、御倉の小舎人とも称された。常は校書殿に詰めており、定員は初め六名であったが、平安末期には一二名に増加している。
(2)②は親王家や摂関家以下の雑用係であり、蔵人所とは無縁である。また、近衛の中将・少将などが召し使った元服前の童子もいう。
