Greeks active in northwestern India from the 2nd century BCE to the end of the 1st century BCE. In Sanskrit, they are called Yavana, a corrupted form of Ionia, and in slang, Yona. The Bactrian region of Central Asia, located at the northeastern edge of Alexander the Great's empire, came under the control of the Seleucid Empire of Syria after the death of Alexander the Great, but around 250 BCE, the Greek satrap Diodotus established an independent kingdom there. The Greek forces of this Bactrian kingdom invaded northwestern India around 200 BCE, when the Mauryan Empire was on the decline, and at one point advanced their forces as far as the middle reaches of the Ganges River.

前2世紀から前1世紀末にかけて西北インドで活動したギリシア人。サンスクリット語ではイオニアのなまったヤバナYavanaの名で，また俗語ではヨーナYonaの名で呼ばれる。アレクサンドロス大王の帝国の北東端にあたる中央アジアのバクトリア地方は，大王の死後シリアのセレウコス朝の支配下に入ったが，前250年ごろギリシア人太守ディオドトスがこの地に独立王国をうち建てた。このバクトリア王国のギリシア人勢力は，マウリヤ朝が衰退に向かった前200年ごろから西北インドに侵入し，一時はガンガー(ガンジス)川中流域にまで兵を進めた。
