A village in Nishitama County, west of Tokyo. Population 3,560 (1995). A mountain village located upstream of Akigawa, a tributary of the Tama River, charcoal production and forestry were once thriving, but they declined in the 1960s. Currently, konjac and shiitake mushrooms are produced, and cyclamen is cultivated, taking advantage of the cool climate. Most of the village area belongs to Chichibu-Tama National Park, and it was left behind by the development of transportation and communication, and felt quite isolated. However, in 1973, the Okutama Toll Road was completed, running from the village of Kazuma at the very back of Minami-Akigawa to Lake Okutama, and it has become a recreational spot near Tokyo.
